Geopolitics and Cybersecurity: Navigating an Era of Digital Power Struggles

Geopolitics continues to shape the global cyber threat environment, with nation state competition driving state-aligned activity. The race for technological supremacy among leading powers has intensified. At the same time, long-standing alliances are being strained, contributing to global fragmentation.
Against this backdrop, calls for tech independence and sovereignty are rising across regions. Countries from Canada and Japan to Brazil, India, and the EU are reassessing their dependencies, while “De-risking” and “diversifying” become central to both policymakers and business leaders.
Meanwhile, adversaries remain active. Russia continues its “shadow war” in Europe, targeting critical infrastructure in Poland, Ukraine, and beyond. China remains the most significant global concern. More nations are conducting offensive cyber operations, such as in Venezuela and Iran, as seen in the public domain. Cybercrime, now supercharged by AI, further increases the scale, precision, and impact of malicious operations.
In response, nations and international bodies are strengthening cybersecurity frameworks, public private partnerships, and AI driven defense mechanisms. The US continues to lead in cyber information sharing, while China is stepping up capacity-building in the Global South, thereby also extending its influence.
The threat landscape is evolving faster than ever, demanding continuous innovation, resilience, risk assessment, and renewed global cooperation.
